How to Start a Server in Terraria Without Using Hamachi

The Hamachi virtual private network application streamlines the process of creating your own "Terraria" server, but you can also start a server without it. In order for the server to be accessible to other players, you have to be familiar with the process of port forwarding. This involves changing your router's configuration and differs depending on the router's make and model. You can create a dedicated server that continues to run after you quit the game or a normal server that closes once you exit the game.

Instructions

  1. Setting Up Your Router

    • 1

Navigate to a website such as ifconfig, WhatIsMyIP or WhatIsMyIPAddress and take note of the IP address for your router.

    • 2

Enter the IP address for your router in the address bar of your browser and press "Enter."

    • 3

Enter the login details for your router and access the "Port Forwarding" section of your router configuration.

    • 4

Forward port number 7777, which is the default port used for "Terraria" multiplayer. The process of forwarding ports differs depending on the make and model of your router. If you are unsure how to perform this action, navigate to the Port Forward website (link in Resources) and select your router from the list for instructions on how to port forward.

    • 5

Save the settings and exit your router configuration.

    Creating a Server

    • 6

Select "Terraria" from your Steam library and click the "Play" button to launch the game.

    • 7

Click "Multiplayer" and then select the "Host & Play" option.

    • 8

Select or create your character and then select or create the world that you want to play in.

    • 9

Enter a server password if desired and then click "Accept" to launch the server. Other players can join your server by entering the server IP address and password. If you exit the game, the server closes and all other players are disconnected.

    Creating a Dedicated Server

    • 10

Navigate to the "Terraria" folder inside your "Steam/steamapps/common" folder and launch the "TerrariaServer.exe" file.

    • 11

Enter the number that corresponds to the game world that you want to play in and press "Enter." Alternatively, press "d" to generate a new world and then press "Enter."

    • 12

Enter the maximum numbers that you want to allow on your server and then press "Enter."

    • 13

Press "Enter" when prompted for the server port to use the default value of "7777."

    • 14

Enter a server password and press "Enter" to password-protect your server. Alternatively, press "Enter" without entering a password if you do not wish to make use of this feature.

    • 15

Type "help" (without quotation marks) and press "Enter" for a list of server commands. Using the server commands, you can see a list of all players on your server, kick or ban players, send messages or save the game world.

    • 16

Minimize the server window and launch "Terraria" if you want to join your own server. Enter "Exit" (without the quotation marks) in the server window and press "Enter" when you want to shut down the server. The server remains running until you execute this command, even if you exit the game yourself.
