How to Update Space Empires With Linux

Like other Windows games, the various versions of Malfador Machinations' space strategy game "Space Empires" can be coaxed to run on Linux with the help of Wine, a program that legally mimics a Windows environment so that Linux users can run Windows applications without requiring a separate Windows system. Once you've installed "Space Empires" via Wine, you can also apply official patches, just as you would with a true Windows installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Wine, if you haven't already. Visit Winehq.org/download/ and follow the instructions to install the emulator on your specific Linux distribution.

    • 2

Install "Space Empires" via Wine by right-clicking the installation file and clicking "Open With Wine Windows Program Loader." Follow the on-screen instructions to install the game.

    • 3

Apply a downloaded patch for "Space Empires" the same way you installed the game -- right-click the patch file and select the "Open With Wine" option. Patches for the various versions of "Space Empires" are available on the developer's website at malfador.com.
