How to Make New Character Graphics in RPG Maker

"RPG Maker" gives aspiring game designers the necessary tools to easily create a role-playing video game without any previous experience in video game programming. "RPG Maker" comes with a number of prefabricated character graphics so you can immediately begin work on your game after installing the program. However, if you want to customize every aspect of your game, you can also create your own character graphics in a photo editing program and import them into "RPG Maker."

Instructions

    • 1

Open the character sprite folder located in your "RPG Maker" game folder. This folder features all of the character graphics in any given game, both prefabricated and custom. Select a file to use as the base for your own character.

    • 2

Open the file you want to use as the base in your photo editing software of choice. Save the file under a new file name in the character sprite folder. The file must be saved as a .PNG file. The file will contain multiple sprites, which comprise the walking animation for the character in each direction.

    • 3

Alter the graphic file to create a new character. Zoom in as close as you can and draw new clothing, hair and skin tones using the pen tool. Add new layers to the image for each piece of the graphic to make it easier to quickly alter different pieces. Continue the process until you have completed all sprites on the character graphic image.

    • 4

Repeat the process for your character's battle picture and menu portrait. The battle picture is a static, full-body picture that is shown next to your character's name during battle; the menu portrait is a head shot of your character used in menu screens. You can either alter the provided images in the character graphics folders or draw your own from scratch.

Open your game file in "RPG Maker" and click on the graphic database to import the new character graphics into your game. Open the character creation tab and assign the sprite sheet, battle picture and menu portrait to the character of your choice.
