Party Quest Bosses
Party quests typically take place in different towns. For example, at level 20 you can join the Kerning PQ which requires you to defeat the King Slime boss at the last stage for experience and items. King Slime looks like a much larger version of regular slimes, which he also spawns. In Ludibrium, you must defeat Alishar, a much larger and more detailed clock monster that spawns various Chronos monsters. Lord Pirate, who has a sharp-looking hook instead of a hand, is the boss at the end of the Herb Town party quest and is also surrounded by lesser pirate monsters. Papa Pixie is the boss at the end of Orbis PQ that shares a design basis with the Lunar and Star Pixies around Orbis
Major Bosses
The most difficult monsters in the game are major bosses, whose stories tend to tie in with the mythology of the Maple world and plot. For example, Horntail is a three-headed dragon-type monster that lives within the caves of Leafre. Whenever a party defeats Horntail, you will see a notice in your chat updates about the new heroes. Like Horntail, Zakum has multiple parts you must defeat. Each of its eight arms has an ability, such as healing the monster or casting spells on your character. One of Zakum's drops is the much-coveted Zakum helmet which improves a variety of stats. Finally, another major boss is Balrog, a giant, bull-like creature with horns and wings. Although he is not an active boss at the time of publication, "MapleStory" mythology exists that he will walk the Earth once more.
Location Bosses
Some bosses re-spawn in a specific area. Mano is a giant snail between Lith Harbor and Henesys, who is always surrounded by regular snails. At only level 20, Mano has seen defeat at the hands of many players. Stumpy is the dried-out husk of a tree located in the mountains around Perion. He wears an evil face at all times. If you visit Florina Beach, you may stumble upon the clawed, shell-monster known as King Clang. You may not even realize he is a boss until you accidentally attack him, and he rises up out of the sand. Crimson Balrogs are the smaller, winged monsters that may attack when you ride the ship from Ellinia to Orbis -- so move inside to stay safe. Rombot is the robot boss, controlled by a purple Bloctopus, in the towers of Ludibrium. Don't let Deu's bushy eyebrows full you; he may look old but this desert boss can deal some damage.
Event Bosses
Nexon, the creators of "MapleStory," sometimes throws bosses into populated areas during events, like the anniversary or Winter events. The Christmas King Slime is complete with a Santa hat while Snowman1 and Snowman2 wear angry scowls when they try to take down players. Amusingly, Nexon sometimes releases fake bosses, which may appear like legitimate monsters. For example, Fake Papulatus Clock lurks around Ludibrium as a decoy for the real Papulatus. This boss is weaker than the real thing. Fake bosses generally do not summon spawns.
