How to Get Past the Altar in Zork

Infocom created the text adventure game "Zork" in the early 1980s; it is well-known as one of the first of these types of games. There comes a point in the first "Zork" game when you have to retrieve a coffin from the Temple of Zork. This would not ordinarily be a problem, except that the coffin itself is too large to fit through the temple's exit, and so you would seem to be stuck inside the temple. There is a way out, however, tied to the "Altar of Frobozz" in the main temple room.

     Get the coffin from the Egyptian Room. Make sure you "Open Coffin" and "Get Scepter" before continuing.

     Move one room west and one room south to enter the Altar Room.

     Type "Pray." You will pray at the altar, then be magically transported to a clearing in the nearby forest.
