How to Install the Warcraft 2 ROM in DOSBox

With the release of newer computer operating systems, such as Windows Vista and Windows 7, older computer video games have been more difficult to install and play. On older operating systems, games made even within the last 15 years, like Blizzard's Warcraft 2, could be played by simply putting in the CD-ROM and installing it like any other program. The reason these newer operating systems cannot play the games is because they require the DOS operating system to run. Using a program called DOSBox you can quickly install and play Warcraft 2 or your other older favorites.

  Navigate to the DOSBox website and download the latest version of the DOSBox Windows installation file.

  Run the installation file and install DOSBox into a new folder named "C:\DOSBox." Also create another empty folder named "C:\OldGames" in which you will install the Warcraft 2 game.

  Insert the Warcraft 2 CD-ROM into the CD drive on your computer.

  Open the DOSBox folder and run the file DOSBox.exe. In the black box that appears, type "mount c C:\OldGames" and press enter. This tells the program where to install Warcraft 2.

  Type "mount d D:\ -t cdrom" and press enter. This lets the program know where the Warcraft 2 installation CD is located. If your CD-ROM drive is a letter other than D, change the previous line to reflect the appropriate drive letter. You can determine what letter it is by going to "My Computer" and looking at the drive name.

  Type "D:\setup.exe" and press enter to begin the Warcraft 2 installation. Go through the setup screens and leave all of the default options as they are except for the sound card and music device. Select "Soundblaster 16" from the list of devices when you reach the appropriate screen.

  Run Warcraft 2 by typing "C:\OldGames\WAR2\WAR2.exe" in the DOSBox prompt and pressing enter.
