Homemade Racing Game

Horse racing is an American tradition, with the famous triple crown races serving as national viewing and smaller race tracks scattered from coast to coast. The Horse Racing Game takes the fun of spending an evening at the horse track into a game that can be played at home, wagering pretend money in an attempt to win rather than risking real money, and uses dice to simulate the luck that is involved on betting on real horses.

Instructions

  1. Making the Game

    • 1

Draw 11 boxes, side-by-side in a single row, near one edge of the poster board, with each box 1-inch by 1-inch.

    • 2

Draw two boxes, each 1-inch by 1-inch, coming forward off both boxes at the end of the first row.

    • 3

Draw three boxes coming off the boxes one space in from each end of the row, four boxes off the squares two spaces in from the end, and so on until you reach the center box, which has seven additional boxes extending out. The final grid will have a pyramid shape.

    • 4

Draw the numbers two through 12 in the first row on the poster, starting with two on the left and 12 on the right.

    • 5

Number the index cards with the numbers two through 12, with only one number on each card and four cards bearing each number.

    • 6

Create 11 horse tokens if desired, by gluing 11 small horse pictures onto the poster board and cutting them into 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch squares. Alternatively, 11 plastic tokens or coins can be used, as long as they have a diameter less than 1 inch.

    Playing the Game

    • 7

Disperse play money to the players at the table, using the denominations of your choosing.

    • 8

Pay a pre-determined buy-in fee from each player's money stock.

    • 9

Deal out the horse cards so that every player gets the same amount of cards, dealing as many cards as possible without having players receive extras.

    • 10

Roll the dice and remove the horse token matching the first four unique numbers rolled. These four horses have been scratched and will not run.

    • 11

Roll the dice and move the horse that matches the number rolled forward one space. Continue rolling until one horse has its number rolled while in the last square in its row.

    • 12

Divide the pot among the players holding the cards of the winning horse.
