List of 3D Board Games

Folks who love board games sometimes find that they need more of a challenge. For these people, there are board games that can be played in three dimensions, adding to the game's difficulty. In these games, pieces are not only played on the surface of one game board, but they can also be played vertically, moving to other boards within the game.
  1. The Queen's Gambit

    • Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit is played on a three-dimensional board which represents the Queen's Palace. The game is based on the action at the end of the movie "Star Wars, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace." There are more than 150 playing pieces, plus four decks of cards. Players are dealt 10 cards and must choose four, then arrange them in battle order. The action comes from alternating turns and following the instructions on the cards. Battles are decided by rolling dice. The winner is the player who wins the most battles. The game is designed for two players ages 12 and up. It can be purchased online and at some larger toy stores. The cost is about $150 to $170.

    3D Chess

    • Experienced chess players may enjoy the extra challenge offered by playing the game in three dimensions. 3D chess is available with several different board styles. One type is a classic chess board that has different levels but is used essentially the same as the flat board. Another type has a series of three chess boards arranged one above another. In this version, all pieces retain their original moves, but the moves can also be executed up or down through the different levels. Three-dimensional chess is available in the classic chess version, as well as in specialized sets, such as Star Trek chess. Experienced chess players of any age can play these games which are available at toy stores and online. Cost is about $20 to $30 for basic sets.

    Nab-It

    • Scrabble Nab-It is played on a flat board, but the tiles can be stacked to any height as new words are made from old ones. As with Scrabble, words are laid out on the board in crossword fashion, but in this game you can makes changes to the existing words as well. "Word" can become "ward" if you can build a word using the "A" at the time you make the change. Each player has a different color of letter tiles for making his words. At the end of the game, the number of words of each color is counted. Whoever has the most words showing wins the game. Players of ages 8 and up can enjoy Nab-It. The cost is about $20, and it is available most places games are sold.
