Carrom Tips

Carrom.org describes the game carrom as similar to Snooker or Crokinole. It uses a square wooden board with four corner pockets. Players flick a "striker" at the game pieces (carrommen) that resemble black and white checkers. The goal is to sink your nine pieces plus the red queen into the pockets first. Carrom requires balance and concentration in order to get the best shot. There are a few basic tips that professionals offer in order to play your best game.
  1. Grip

    • In the game of carrom, how you hold the striker, or your "grip" affects your speed and accuracy.

One of the most important aspects of the game, according to Carrom.org, is the player’s grip. There are two common and effective grips a player can use for simple forward shots. The straight grip is made with the palm down, fingers resting on the carrom board and the wrist on the frame. Shoot with the index or middle finger making a forward push or a "flick".

The scissor grip, where the hand is laid flat on the carrom board and the shot is made by the middle finger, is less common. The index finger rests on the middle finger, holding in back until the player is ready to shoot. This produces a “snap” which can provide a great deal of force when done properly.

Probably the most important aspect of a player&'s game is their grip. Having a proper grip is essential for maintaining consistency and accuracy in one&'s stroke.

    Hand Position

    • Carrom.org recommends that regardless of the striking technique you choose to use, you must make sure the edge of your palm and/or thumb and striking finger are stable in order to ensure that you flick the striker instead of pushing it. You must also keep your striking finger as close as possible to the striker. Touching it is best. If it is too far away, you may hit it with your nail which will simply hurt your finger and alter the accuracy of your shot.

    Sitting Position

    • Sit properly on your chair and don&'t move too far from the game board.

In Carrom, how you sit is very important. Pscamohali.com offers this tip for improving your skill at the game of Carrom. A perfect game can only be played when you sit properly on your chair. Keep your legs in front of the chair, with your body in line with the path you wish your striker to go, but never in line with the pocket you wish the carromman to go in. If your chair is too far away from the board, then you must play from the edge of your seat, making it difficult to balance. You also need to stretch to reach for playing, creating tension in your playing hand. Position yourself in a such a way that you cover more than half of your seat.

    Footwork and Movement

    • Finding the right footwork will prevent cramping when playing carrom for long periods.

Locking your ankles around the legs of your chair allows you to move only your upper body and ensures you will not cross imaginary lines and get a foul. If you need to move your full body, put both hands on your chair, find your position and then release the seat and play. Using the seat as “support”, or playing with a hand on your chair, and moving your chair across the floor is considered a foul.

Another tip to remember is that sitting with your feet inside the chair stand (between the legs) while playing will make playing awkward as you are not in a good position to play your strokes. The position of your feet is very important, and you should practice moving your feet so that while you play you can help blood circulation in your legs. Players have experienced cramping when playing for long periods because they haven’t moved and this will hurt your focus.

    Height

    • Many carrom players bring a cushion to tournaments as the seat heights may vary.

Pscamohali.com points out that shorter players often bring a cushion or a bed sheet to tournaments, since the height of the seats and players tends to vary. The difference in height between the players’ seats may not be much as you move from one table to another, but the slightest difference can change your grip and that affects your game. A seat that is too low is an issue because the player may stand or rise slightly to take a shot, which is not allowed. Be prepared with a cushion or something that will adjust the height of your seat.
