How to Paint a Space Marine in the Warhammer Game

Games Workshops' Warhammer Universe has been providing fodder for board games since 1983. The collectible nature of the intricately detailed figurines used in Warhammer has become one of the primary draws to the game. Painting the Space Marine figures in particular requires a keen eye for detail and color, as their faction is regimented and organized, as opposed to other factions in the Warhammer Universe like the Greenskins.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray can of acrylic primer
  • Games Workshop or equivalent paints

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble your Space Marine figure. Attach it to its base, gluing together separately packaged body parts and adding any accessories or items it may come with. Check that the figure is attached tightly to the base. Allow all other parts ample time to set and dry before painting.

    • 2

Cut the leftover plastic material away with your hobby knife. Make sure not to cut or nick the marine. The amount of leftover molding plastic will vary from figure to figure.

    • 3

Choose your colors. Use the proper paints from Games Workshop or a third-party alternative.

    • 4

Spray a layer of primer onto the figure, making sure it is neither too heavy a layer or too thin. If you're in doubt, apply a light layer first and make it heavier if you need more primer.

    • 5

Paint the larger areas of the figure and save the smaller, more detailed areas for later. Thin out your paints with water. You can use many coats of water-thinned paint to get the color you are looking for. Use your magnifying glass to paint smaller areas.

    • 6

Apply any number of FX items to the figure. Sand, grit and bits of tree are popular choices for making a Space Marine look more authentic.

    • 7

Allow your figure to dry overnight. When it is fully dry, apply a coat of matte varnish to finish the paint job and make sure no paint is smudged.
