Instructions
Decide whether or not you want traditional chess pieces or you'd like to play with a themed chess set. A variety of themed chess sets exists including Civil War and Star Wars.
Refrain from buying a set of chess pieces through an online auction website if you are concerned about mint quality because you won't be able to inspect the quality of the pieces before buying.
Identify the function of your chess pieces. If you plan to use the chess pieces for competitive tournament, they must adhere to a basic design without being too large or small in size. Visit the United States Chess Federation website (see Resources) for the exact size requirements. There are no guidelines if you plan to use the pieces for decorative or recreational use at home.
Look outside traditional retail locations if you're buying a decorative chess piece set. You'll sometimes find vintage chess in local antique stores. Some upscale cigar shops also sell chess pieces. Some chess players build an eclectic set by buying individual pieces from online auctions or yard sales.
