How to Make Use of a Snow Day

Whether you're a kid, a college student, or a working professional, a snow day is an ideal time for catching up with loved ones, relaxing or trying new activities around the house. When the roads are closed and the weather is treacherous, staying inside often means you get a break from the daily grind of school or work. If the whole neighborhood gets the day off, you might also be able to brainstorm fun activities for a large crowd, such as a potluck party or an indoor picnic.

Instructions

    • 1

Wake up early to determine how serious the snow conditions are. News channels will usually announce school closures early in the morning, or you can check major freeways to see if you will be able to get to work. If it looks like you won't be able to get to school or work for a few days, you might be able to plan a spontaneous trip somewhere via roads that have better accessibility. See what travel destinations you might be able to visit.

Have a movie marathon day where you watch your favorite films or TV shows. Snow days are the perfect excuse to relax on the couch and catch up on your favorite programs. Invite some neighbors or friends over and pop some popcorn. You might be able to get through an entire season of your favorite TV show on DVD.

Spend the day in the kitchen. Cook, bake or try some new recipes. See what you can come with based on the stuff you have in your pantry or refrigerator. Prepare enough food so you can freeze some of it and have meals for the entire week. If you have kids, have them help out.

Do arts and crafts. Whether you've had a knitting project sitting around unfinished or your kids want to try a new activity, a snow day gives you the perfect opportunity to do it. Paint, draw, crochet, sew, make collages or do bead work.

Get outside. Snow days can be fun if you know local spots to go sledding or tubing down a hill. If you don't have a sled, blow up a pool raft or use an old tire. For something a little more low-key, take a walk in nature. Enjoy the silence and stillness that snow brings to forests or parks.
