How to Design a Dot-to-Dot Game

Activity books, computer printouts and smartphone apps offer kids many options for dot-to-dot games, but these basic images may not appeal to the child. Custom images, such as a favorite character, can entice the child to connect the dots and learn her number and letter sequences. Choose appealing pictures from magazines and use a light-up tracing desk to create your own dot-to-dot game. Include your child in the process of making the game to develop her creativity and fine motor skills, as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through magazines together with your child and choose pictures that the child likes. Find child-friendly images in kids' magazines, parent magazines and advertisements. Cut out the pictures to shape.

    • 2

Place a single image on the light-up tracing desk and cover it with the sheet of white paper. Tape the paper in place.

    • 3

Follow the picture's outside edge and mark it intermittently with dots. Number or letter each dot in sequential order.

    • 4

Choose a few standout details within the picture's border and trace them. Include any details that will help make the image recognizable once the child connects the outside edge, such as facial features and clothing.

    • 5

Remove the white paper from the light-up tracing desk and instruct your child in connecting the dots.
