Activities for Kids to Do With Sweetheart Candies

Many children love the pastel, heart-shaped candies known as Sweethearts. The candies are available in abundance around the month of February. When planning a Valentine's party or looking to keep bored children busy, prepare a few activities using the colorful candies. From craft projects to games, all you need are a few supplies and some activity ideas to satisfy any child's sweet tooth.
  1. Educational Activities

    • Give each child a bag of Sweetheart candies and have them sort the candies by color. Alternatively, have the children sort the candies by the wording on each one. Another idea is to give each child a sheet of paper and glue. Have the children spell out their names on the sheet of paper using the candies. Make a counting game by having the children group the candies in groups of three or five.

    Contests

    • Children can have contests using Sweetheart candies. Give each child a bowl of candies and set a timer for two minutes. The children have two minutes to building the tallest candy tower. If the tower falls before the two minutes, they can start again. The player with the tallest standing candy tower at the end of two minutes wins the game. Another idea is to give each child a bowl or candies, frosting to use as glue and a paper plate. The children have 10 minutes to build a candy creation. Award prizes for the best, most creative and funniest creations.

    Guessing Games

    • Fill a large clear jar with Sweetheart candies and have each child guess how many candies are in the jar. The child who guesses closest to the correct amount wins the jar of candy. Alternatively, fill several small and medium size jars to give away several prizes. Place one of each color candy on a tray and show the children. Take the tray out of the room and remove one candy. When you bring the tray back in, the first child to tell you the color of the missing candy wins a prize.

    Other Activities

    • Other activities include making custom Sweetheart candy messages and candy photo frames. Use a clean emery board to file off the messages on the hearts. Have the children use food pens to write their own messages on the hearts. They can draw pictures or write special messages on the candy hearts. Give each child a basic photo frame and have her glue Sweetheart candies all around the outside of the frame. Other craft ideas include covering a headband or jewelry box with the heart-shaped candies.
