How to Chain Effects in Yu-Gi-Oh!

A chain is formed in Yu-Gi-Oh! when one player attempts to trump the other's effect card. An effect card is a card that contains a spell or specifies another effect that negates the powers of the opponents Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. An effect chain is only three links long. The player that initiates the chain has two opportunities to battle the opponent, while the opponent only has one opportunity to respond to the challenge.

Instructions

    • 1

Activate a card effect. To begin the chain, one player must play a card the causes an effect; such as a spell or trap card. This becomes the first link in the chain, or Chain Link 1. Normal monster cards are not effect cards; effect monster cards specify "Effect" beside their name on the card.

    • 2

Ask player 2, "Do you wish to continue?" Not asking after the effect card is played could result in a replay.

    • 3

Answer the first player with a "yes" or "no." If the second player has no counter-effect, the chain ends and the effect of the first player is activated.

    • 4

Counter the first player's effect card. The second player can counter the first player's card with a card that negates the first card's effects; this becomes the second link and a chain is started.

    • 5

Ask player 1, "Do you wish to continue?" Not asking after the effect card is played could result in a replay.

    • 6

Answer the second player with a "yes" or "no." If the first player has no counter-effect, the chain ends and the effect of the second player is activated.

    • 7

Place an effect card to counter player 2's card. The first player then has another opportunity to negate the effect that was used by player 2. The last effect card in the chain, which is player 1's card, is then activated. The previous two cards played can't be activated.
