Ideas for Non-Competitive Games

Games are a great way for people to stay active and get better acquainted with one another. Sometimes non-competitive games are preferred, as these games don't label one player the 'winner' and the others the 'losers' -- instead, the purpose is just to have fun. Fortunately, a variety of non-competitive games exist to suit this purpose.
  1. Identify Tree

    • In this game, one participant is blindfolded and led towards a single tree. The blindfolded participant then has one minute to feel the shape of the tree and remember any identifying features. After this, the player is led away from the trees and the blindfold is removed. The player now has the job of trying to guess which tree they were led to. This game works well with a single blindfolded player, or with a small group; the advantage of a small group is that they'll work in a team to remember details and information, encouraging communication.

    Copy Cats

    • This active game is ideal for warming up and stretching muscles. All the players are grouped into pairs, and one member of each pair is labelled the "copy cat". The copy cat is required to mimic and mirror all the movements of the other player. This can produce fun physical challenges, or can be combined with music to create synchronized dances. After a few minutes, the "copy cat" is switched to the other player.

    Rafts

    • This "tag" based game is created by laying several pieces of paper on the floor, with each player (except one) standing on a different piece. Each piece of paper represents a "raft" and the floor between the rafts represents water. One player is assigned to be the "shark" and they start the game in the water. When the shark yells "Swim!" all the players on rafts have to jump into the water and find a different raft to board -- however, only one player can use each raft. While the players are in the water, the shark attempts to "bite" them (by tagging), which makes that player become the new shark in the next round.

    Freeze Dance

    • This music game can have hilarious results and can be a great way to break the ice within new groups of people. Music is played, and all players are required to dance. When the music stops, the players are required to "freeze" in position. This will often reveal wacky dancing positions, which can cause a lot of laughter.
