Short Rainforest Activities

Many children find the rainforest, with inhabitants like tree frogs and spider monkeys, very intriguing. When planning a rainforest party or teaching children about these tropical spaces, plan a few easy activities for them to do. Short, hands-on activities and games will keep children with a short attention span involved in learning about the rainforest. A few supplies and some ideas are all you need to get started.
  1. Frog Activities

    • Give each child a picture of a tree frog. Ask the children to color the frog with markers or crayons. Give each child a bingo dauber, pompoms or round stickers to create dots on the frog. For another frog craft, give each child a paper plate and have her color it with green paint or markers. Fold the plate in half to and use a skinny piece of red construction paper to make the tongue. Make arms and legs with green construction paper. Tape the tongue inside the opening of the paper plates (slightly hanging out). Tape the arms on the side of the plate and legs on the bottom. Make eyes to glue on the top of the plate or have the children draw the eyes with markers.

    Rainforest Vine Activities

    • Give the children several pieces of construction paper and have them cut shapes of things found in the rainforest. Some examples include leaves, snakes, monkeys, sloths, flowers, butterflies and caterpillars. After the children cut out the shapes, lay out a long piece of green yarn and have the children tape each shape to the piece of yarn. If you have enough time, allow each child to make his own vine with rainforest items.

    Binocular Crafts

    • Have the children sit around a table and give each child two empty toilet-paper rolls. Ask the children to glue or tape the toilet paper rolls side-by-side. For added decoration, the children can use markers, stickers, paint, rhinestones and glitter to decorate their binoculars. For another idea, poke a hole on each side of the binoculars. String yarn through the holes so the children can wear the binoculars around their neck. For safety reasons, do not tie the yarn tight around their neck.

    Easy Rainforest Games

    • The children can play a short game of charades using animals found in the rainforest like monkeys, snakes, bats, tigers and birds. Write the animal names on slips of paper and place the slips in a bowl. Each child must draw a slip of paper and act out the animal. The child who guesses the animal earns a point. The first child to earn three points wins the game. For another idea, divide the players into teams and the first team to score five points wins the game.
