Show and Tell
Collect different-shaped objects, such as wire whisks, spoons, spatulas, shampoo bottles and mirrors, and show them to your baby. Avoid any objects that may be dangerous or toxic, and don't allow the baby to hold the object. Display the object before your baby and describe it in simple terms. Show movement or sounds associated with the object. For example, if it's a whisk, whip it around in circles. If it's a bell, ring it. Take your baby to your closet, which is filled with brightly colored clothing of different textures. Rub your baby's cheek with your cashmere sweater, swirl a glimmering skirt, run a silk shirt along his arm. In time, your baby will want to touch fabrics that are embroidered or beaded.
Sing with Gusto
Close the curtains and windows so that you don't disturb your neighbors and sing to your baby with gusto. Learn classic songs, such as "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," but sing them with different types of voices to entertain your baby. Let your voice drop to a low growl and then soar to a squeak. Wrap your hand in a sock to make a puppet. Act out the song. Tap the bottom of his feet gently to help him feel the rhythm of the song, or rock him back and forth.
Afternoon Dancing
Use exaggerated movements to dance for your baby. Shake your booty, wiggle your hands, twist your feet and swivel your head. The sillier the movement, the more your baby will smile. Clap to accent the beat. As your baby grows used to being rocked, she will later enjoy swings in the air or bumps against your lap. If you're strong enough, pick her up and hold her above your head to enjoy a flight through the air. Make sure to offer neck support to young babies. Don't shake her.
Spices, Bubbles and Balls
Blow bubbles if you are in the bathroom and washing your baby. Pretend you're a fish and blow a stream of bubbles. Make noises as if you're a choo-choo train and puff out bubbles. Play with plastic balls on a soft carpet if you're in the living room. Roll the ball slowly towards your baby. Encourage him to roll it back to you. Toss the ball high into the air and let it drop to the floor, crying out "Oops!" Tote your baby to the spice rack in the kitchen and open up different bottles of spices. Allow your baby to smell the cinnamon. Test out other fragrances, such as peppermint, nutmeg and cloves, with your baby.
