Teeth Songs and Actions
Make up a simple song about teeth cleaning to a tune children already know, such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" or "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." Use rhymes such as: toothbrush and don't rush, toothpaste and clean taste and clean right and shiny bright. Teach children actions to go along with the different parts of the song, miming putting toothpaste on the brush, cleaning their teeth and rinsing their mouths. Sing the song every day throughout the month.
Good Teeth Poster
Cut out two images of big toothy smiles and stick them on a large piece of card. Give children cut out pictures of health foods that are good for teeth and sweet sticky snacks. Help them color in the teeth in one of the smiles black, to indicate decay, and stick the pictures of sugary foods around it. Stick pictures of calcium-rich healthy foods around the bright white smile.
Dentist Game
Print out pictures of a dentist's room or download pictures from an official dental health organization. Help the children color in different items in the room and explain to them what the different objects --- such as a dental chair, mouth mirror, light and simple (non-scary) tools --- are called. Give them each a hand mirror and help them count their own teeth just like a dentist would.
My Smile
Encourage children to value their own smiles by asking them to draw themselves with a big happy smile with lots of bright shiny white teeth and a sad smile with no teeth or just a few decayed teeth. Discuss the reasons why we need strong healthy teeth and why we have to keep our teeth clean. Write down their ideas on a big piece of card. Stick the pictures of the happy smiles around them. Revise the reasons with them throughout the month.
