Kids Games That Originated in Europe

Several of the most popular children's games originated in Europe. The toy industry first came to prominence in Germany in the 14th century with factories that specialized in wooden figurines. By the 18th century, these factories produced everything from dolls to several types of children's games. As technology and distribution improved, those games came to America.
  1. Dominoes

    • Dominoes became popular in Italy in the mid-18th century then found favor in England. Dominoes involves moving a series of tiles in correspondence to dice throws. The English dominoes were notable because they were made of ebony, bone and brass.

    Marbles

    • Marbles originated in England in the 17th century. Marbles were also popular in Germany. The first marbles were made from marble chips, then glass and clay. One of the earliest English marbles game was called Conqueror, which involved trying to literally break in half the other player's "taw" or prized shooting marble.

    Jigsaw Puzzles

    • British born John Spilsbury made the first jigsaw puzzle in 1763. His puzzles were maps made out of painted wood to teach children geography. The first known Spilsbury jigsaw puzzle showed a map of England and Wales.

    Jacks

    • Jacks originated with the ancient Greeks and Romans. The rules haven't changed. Jacks involves throwing a ball in the air and picking up a certain number of items (jacks) to correspond to how many times the ball bounces. It's also been called Jackstones, Knucklebones or Five Stones.

    Hopscotch

    • Hopscotch originated in ancient England as a military training exercise to teach dexterity during the Roman occupation. Roman children watched these exercises, then reinterpreted the "game" by creating a set of rules. The game is played by throwing a "puck," which can be a rock or some similar object, on a grid drawn out in chalk. The player hops out to the puck and back.
