Scrabble
Children under 13 may enjoy playing word games. With Scrabble, kids enhance spelling and vocabulary by building and spelling words out on a board for points. Whoever has the most points wins. Words with unusual letters or length can increase the score of a player's turn. Scrabble is marked for children 8 years and up. Scrabble Junior helps children younger than 8 learn how to spell words with words pre-printed on the board.
Clue
Clue, another board game for children 9 years old and up, is a murder mystery solving game. Players take turns to discover who killed the victim, with what weapon and in what room. Clue Junior is available for children younger than 9. Clue enables strategic thinking skills and encourages communication among players.
Connect Four
In Connect Four, players ages 6 years and up play with checkers and a plastic or wooden stand-up board. Players drop checkers into the playing board in an attempt to line four in a row. The first player who reaches four in a row wins. Checkers can line up either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Multiple versions of this game are available to add a twist.
Original Memory
To boost memory skills in children from age 3, consider the "Original Memory" game. Pairs of cards have various pictures on them. The player takes a turn to flip over two cards that are arranged face down. Kids sharpen their memory as they remember where cards are located by flipping over two matching cards. The person with the most sets of cards wins.
