Compound Word Games for Kids

A compound word is a combination of two words to form a new one. Students can learn about compound words by playing word games against the clock, against each other or against the teacher. Provide a prize for the winner, and have fun creating compound words.
  1. Compound Memory Match

    • Compound memory match is an easy game to create. Use 10 squares of white paper to make cards. Divide the squares into two sets of five. On one side of the first set of cards, write the first part of a compound word. Write the second part of the compound word on a card from the second set of cards. When you are finished, you should have created five compound words, each divided between two cards. Turn the cards over and do the same process on the other side. Now you have 10 cards with 20 words (one on each side of each card). Mix up the cards and spread them out. Students can match up the words they see, or they may turn over one card at a time to find possible word combinations. Players race against the clock to create as many compound words as possible before time runs out.

    Over the Line

    • Use a piece of tape to mark or chalk a line on the floor. The teacher should stand 20 steps back from the line. Prepare at least 25 flash cards that have one part of a compound word printed at the top. Underneath the first word, a numbered list of four more words is printed. All of the words combine with the top word to form a compound word except one. The students must figure out which word does not combine with the first word to make a compound word. For example, the top word may be "house." The four words beneath may be "warming," "hold," "boat" and "cup." The only word that does not combine with "house" to form a compound word is "cup." If the students call out the right answer, the teacher takes one step toward the line. The students' goal is to get enough questions correct to send the teacher over the line.

    Compound Word Search

    • Prepare a word search using compound words. There are computer software programs and online programs you can use to create word search grids with original content. The compound words can run up, down, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, forward and backward. Print a word list underneath the grid to make it a little easier for younger children. Make enough copies for each child and give the children three minutes to find as many words as they can. Increase the time to five minutes for younger children. When their time is up, the student who found the most compound words wins the game. Teachers can provide a small prize or special treat for the winner.
