Imagination Games for Kids

Games help kids pass the time as they engage in structured activities, instead of getting into trouble. Instead of using the same old games, try out some games that stretch your kids’ imaginations, helping them to stay interested and challenged by the activity. You can play many of these games while traveling, saving you from the questions about when you will arrive at your destination.
  1. Chain Storytelling

    • The first person in the group starts to tell a story about whatever they wish. When they reach an exciting point in the story, the next person in the group picks up where they left off. The next person can continue the story in the same general direction as the first person, or lead the action in a completely different direction. Continue the activity until everyone has had a chance to tell a part of the story, or keep going for as long as everyone stays interested.

    Drawing Game

    • Have one adult or child close their eyes. Hand them a piece of paper and a pencil or crayon. The person with their eyes closed then draws or scribbles on the paper. After they are done, hand the paper to someone else in the group, who then must turn the scribbles into a drawing of something that actually exists. This challenges kids to use their imagination in seeing the possibilities in a random drawing.

    Imagination Hide and Seek

    • This activity works well when you are driving in the car, flying in a plane or are anywhere else where kids cannot go hide and look for each other. Assign one person to be “it.” The “it” person must think of a place that everyone else in the group knows. The other members of the group then think of where in that place they would hide. After everyone has made up their mind about where they would hide, the “it” person names off specific locations in the place to see if anyone is hiding there. If there are disagreements about where people picked to hide, have everyone write down their hiding location on small slips of paper and turn them in to an adult before playing each round of the game.

    Imaginary Travel

    • Have one kid or the whole group pick a place or a time period they would like to visit. Have everyone brainstorm ways they could experience the place without actually going there, such as researching it on the Internet or at the local library, cooking foods commonly eaten in the place or time period, dressing up in customary clothing, playing traditional music or decorating a room in pictures or objects from the place or time period. If you know anyone who has been to the place, invite them to come speak to the kids about the place and his experiences there.
