Fun Games for Older Kids

Adults know plenty of games that younger kids enjoy, from tag to hide and seek, but older kids require more complex games. Games for older kids often require the use of a strategy, and they may be more fast-paced than games for younger kids. If you introduce older kids to a great new game, though, they can stay busy for hours.
  1. Jury&'s Out!

    • A pair of players have committed a crime, and they are about to come before a jury of their peers. First, they should decide on the crime and discuss all of the details about how the crime occurred--everything from how they were dressed, to how they entered the crime scene, to how they escaped. Then one member of the pair leaves the room, and the rest of the players get to ask one question each to the remaining criminal. The second criminal enters and has to respond to the same questions. If their answers match, the criminals win the round. If one (or two, for younger players) differs, they lose the round. Play continues with different pairs of criminals taking their turns discussing and then being interrogated.

    All Over

    • If you have a large group of kids and a collection of balls, "All Over" is the perfect game to play. Draw a line with masking tape along the floor, and place as many balls as you can collect on the line. Players are divided into two teams, with one team on either side of the line. When the referee calls "All Over!" the player race to the middle and throw or kick as many balls as they can over the line. Play continues with all of the players throwing the balls to the other side of the line until one team is successful in clearing their side of balls. When they do, the referee shouts "All Over!" again, and that team wins the game.

    Get Out of Prison

    • Make a triangle by tying a rope around three trees, 6 to 7 feet high, depending on the height of the players. All players should stand in the middle of the triangle. Tell them that the ropes are really the top of a barbed wire fence that reaches the ground, and that the players must try to get free without touching the fence. Players will have to use their strength and balance to get the first few players over the fence, and their ingenuity to get the last few players over.
