Teamwork Games for Students

Leading a classroom full of students takes a lot of work, especially if some of them refuse to cooperate with each other. Luckily, there are many games to build a spirit of unity and breed teamwork among the students.
  1. Key Punch

    • Write a number from 1 to 30 on separate pieces of paper so that the number covers the entire page. After you've made all 30 numbers, place them on the floor next to each other in a random order to create your keypad. Section off the keypad by placing a rope around it. Divide the students into two teams. Pick one team to go first, and have the other team leave the area. Make sure neither team sees the keypad. Tell the team that they have to press the numbers in sequential order (with one pressed first and 30 pressed last). Only one child at a time can step inside the rope and touch the numbers (with their feet and/or hands). They must try to do this as fast as possible within five attempts. Time each team as they perform the task. Whichever team performs faster wins the game.

    Colors

    • Cut 10 different colored yarns into short pieces, making two pieces for every color. Hide the pieces around a large play area, preferably outside. Divide the students into two teams and tell them to find 10 different colors of yarn to create a complete set. Give them a list of the colors they need to look for. Each team has a minute to decide who looks for what color, or if they all want to look for the colors together. The team who finds the 10 colors first wins the game.

    Hunt for Candy

    • Before the game, hide small containers of candy around the room. Divide the students into teams of about three players each. Tell each group to decide on an animal noise that distinguishes them from the other groups. After each group picks a leader, separate him from the group and blindfold him. The game begins as all of the groups (minus their leaders) search for the candy. When a member finds candy, she makes the animal noise to alert the leader, who follows the sound and collects the candy if his teammate found it first. The team with the most candy at the end wins the game.
