Math Games for Pre-K

Grasping basic math concepts at an early age can put a preschooler on the path to mathematical success in higher grades. Playing math games is a good way to reinforce important concepts and generally hold the attention of children. At the preschool age, most children are beginning to learn their numbers and basic counting skills. There are a number of games that help kids to become masters in these areas.
  1. Turkey Bingo

    • Play turkey bingo, a simplified version of the popular game. Draw the template of a turkey with ten large feathers. Photocopy the template so you'll have enough turkey bingo cards for each preschooler. On each card, write the numbers zero through nine, with a single number appearing on each feather. Make sure to write the numbers in different orders on each card. Pass out the cards along with eight pennies or bingo pieces and explain the instructions. Call out numbers from zero to nine. The first child to have five feathers covered in a row wins that round. Since the game tends to go quickly, switch cards around to play additional rounds. This game helps with number recognition and thinking skills.

    Ice Cream Dice

    • For a game that helps to enforce counting skills and number recognition, draw the outline of an ice cream cone. Divide the cone into 11 equal parts by drawing lines. Write the numbers from two to 12 in the parts. Make enough copies for all game players. The first player rolls two dice and counts the number of dots on both of them, then colors in that number on the ice cream cone. Each player takes turns doing this. When a player rolls a number that is already colored in, the turn is lost. The first child who finishes coloring all the parts of the cone wins.

    Hidden Numbers

    • A child of pre-kindergarten age often enjoys finding hidden things. For a game to play with one or two young children, make a set of number cards from zero to ten or 15, based on her skills. Write the number on each card and draw a corresponding number of dots underneath. Hide the numbered cards around the room. After all of the cards are found, have her place them in the correct order. This game is a good way to practice number recognition and order.
