Speech or Text-Based Computer Games
Children who are blind or visually impaired can still use a computer for both work and entertainment. DOS-based or Windows-based games that rely primarily on text and little on graphics can be modified through the computer to produce speech that recites any text on the screen. Some speech functions will only work on Apple computers, while others will only work on PCs, so pay attention when purchasing a game as to which computer it is compatible with. Some computer games that are text-based or speech-based are Monopoly, Yahtzee, Brain Quest (trivia) and Barnyard Rhythm and Moos, which plays music. Some games require some sighted assistance, but that doesn't mean blind students can't enjoy the game or compete.
Card Games with Braille Playing Cards
Card games are classic kid favorites, and for blind students, all they need is a special deck of cards. Braille playing cards come complete with Braille numbers and symbols as well as visual numbers and symbols so blind and sighted children can play together. Card stack holders make finding the pick-up and discard piles even easier for the visually impaired student. Kids can play games with standard Braille cards, like Go Fish or Rummy, or specific Braille game cards like Uno. Braille playing cards can be found online at braillebookstore.com under "Toys and Games."
Classroom Trivia Games
Classroom trivia games do not require any special modifications for blind students. In these games, the teacher reads trivia questions on various topics aloud to her students. Students can either raise their hands to answer, take turns answering individually or compete in teams. Even in teams, blind students can contribute without any disadvantage as long as no visual component is introduced. All questions should be verbal, and students should not have to race to the blackboard or another location before answering.
Bingo
Bingo is a fun way for students to win prizes in class. Braille bingo cards feature the letters and numbers of a typical bingo game that blind students can use to place their chips as the teacher calls out squares. Braille bingo cards are plastic with indented squares to prevent chips from sliding across the card. Braille bingo cards are available at braillebookstore.com under "Toys and Games."
