Music Games for Teachers

Musical chairs is a popular game for children. In music class, playing games like this with your students is an enjoyable way to help with their music education. Tic-Tac-Tones is a true or false game that's easy for the kids, while a game show can test the kids' knowledge of music.
  1. Game show

    • The purpose of the Game Show game is to teach the students tempo. Begin by preparing questions and answers. For example, use the theme 'tempo.' What does tempo mean? What speed tempo is allegro and vivaco? After you formulate the questions, divide the class into two teams. Offer bonus points for the most well-behaved team. Act as the TV host and offer prizes as part of the props. Follow with questions about different musical topics.

    Tic-Tac-Tones

    • Tic-Tac-Tones is a game requiring two teams. Name your teams something music related. Draw a tic-tac-toe grid on your chalkboard. Call three students from one team and ask them a music-related question. They must come to a consensus on the answer, which is true or false to keep the game flowing. For every correct answer, they can place a mark on the board. To keep the theme music related have them mark a treble clef or bass clef (instead of Xs and Os). Rotate questions among each team. The first team completing a line diagonally, across, or down wins the game.

    The Telephone Rings

    • The Telephone Rings is a song game allowing the students to sing their names. It shows the children that singing is a part of everyday life. Sing a song several times to the students. Then lead them in singing the song. As the kids seated in the circle are singing, pass around a toy telephone. As each takes the phone, it's that child's turn to sing the song. At the end, the child sings the name of the next student to receive the phone.
