Preschool Treasure Hunt Ideas

Preschoolers are a difficult age to host a scavenger hunt for. Even though they possess the enthusiasm for the hunt, they may not have the reading abilities to search for items off a list. Adapting the hunt to be appropriate to their age level is crucial to making it successful. Instead of breaking up into multiple teams, encourage the children to stick together.
  1. Search Books

    • Search books, such as I Spy, have a list of items for children to find with a picture. You can check one out from the library and create a list of things to find using one of the pages in the book, or just make drawings with objects for the children to find. The items are simple for the children to find. Hide the objects in a room or roped-off space. Give the children the list verbally, one at a time, so that they will focus on what to search for. If they need help remembering the clues, keep reminding them what they are looking for to keep them on track. The objects should be hidden in plain view but in a cluttered enough area that it will require them to concentrate on the task.

    Pirate Maps

    • Build your guests' map-reading skills with a pirate-themed treasure map. Give the children a treasure map with the layout of your backyard (or a local park) drawn on the back. Create the map with yellow paper that has been "aged" to give it an authentic feel. As the children follow the map, have prizes such as eye patches waiting for them along the way. Encourage the children to wear the prizes as they go along, building up their pirate costumes. The final treasure chest should be full of chocolate gold coins̵2;the perfect pirate booty for young children.

    The Shape Game

    • Reinforce the children's knowledge of basic shapes by sending them on a hunt to find items of a certain shape. By having them search for shapes, they will learn to recognize them in the world around them. For instance, having them search for an octagon might lead them to a stop sign while a rectangle may lead them to a window or door. This game can be played anywhere. However, to ensure child safety when played outside, make sure that there is at least one adult with them at all times during the hunt. At the end of the hunt, have them search for one final shape̵2;a celebration cake.
