Find Christmas Objects
The basic Christmas treasure hunt involves dividing up players into small teams, perhaps of two or three people, and giving each group a list of Christmas-related objects to find. This list can include traditional festive food such as carrots, cashews and walnuts, as well as decorations such as baubles and nativity pieces, and other Christmas-related favorites including mistletoe and stockings. Players either have to be the first to find each item, or the game supervisor can divide up the list, with each group having to collect only assigned items.
Crazy Items Variant
A variant on the above game finds players looking for slightly more unusual items. As suggested by the Diva Girls Parties and Stuff website, players could search for an angel decoration with a square -- not round -- halo, or a snowman decorated with a cowboy hat. The game's organizer is encouraged to get creative and think wacky, putting a twist on traditional festive sights. The organizer will need to have carefully prepared each item beforehand, since not all of the items will be available to purchase ready-made from stores.
Questions
A different type of treasure hunt doesn't require players to find actual physical objects; rather, players must find the answers to questions. The game's organizer first writes a list of questions relating to Christmas, and then hides a means to find out the answer around the game's location. Suggested question topics include the nativity, Christmas traditions, festive movies and Christmas carol lyrics. The answers to a carol question, for instance, might be located on a song sheet, while a question about a Christmas movie could be solved by checking the case of a DVD in a rack.
Carol Singing Hunt
If players are feeling vocal and are up for heading outdoors, a treasure hunt game could combine carol singing with finding items. Beforehand, the game's organizer assigns the teams a list of items to find; none of these should be available at the starting location. Teams then head around the local area and sing carols to neighbors; at each home, the players try to borrow or at least take a photo of any of the items on the list which their neighbors happen to possess.
