Ideas for a Kids Zoo Scavenger Hunt

Having a birthday party at a zoo is a great adventure for kids of all ages, and a great party idea for the venue is a zoo scavenger hunt. Unlike an ordinary scavenger hunt, kids cannot actually bring the items on the list (animals, zoo workers) back to determine who wins. Instead, parents can find creative new ways to note who found what. Parents can print off lists that kids have to check off as they find items, while older kids can use digital cameras to take photos of each item as they find it.
  1. Endangered Animal Hunt

    • Many animals that zoos have are endangered due to loss of habitat or hunting. Give the kids a list of the endangered animals that the zoo you are visiting has and see if who can find them all. Many zoos have special signs posted for endangered animals, making this a simple idea for younger children.

    Animal Adaptation Hunt

    • A great educational scavenger hunt is to search for animals based on their adaptations. Some animals have camouflage colors to blend in, others have long necks to reach leaves, and others store water to survive in dry climates. Give each child a list of adaptations to look for at the zoo. Adults can share why each adaptation exists.

    Zoo Worker Scavenger Hunt

    • The animals are not the only interesting things to see at the zoo. Kids can search for zoo workers performing tasks to see what all needs to be done. Look for zoo workers feeding animals, cleaning habitats, and providing medical care. In larger zoos there may even be workers who train animals to perform. Children who are interested in working with animals may find this an exciting hunt.
