Function
Totems are spells that are cast by Shamans. When these spells are cast, a physical object, also called a totem, appears near the character and creates an effect that is binding within a certain distance of the object itself. These effects may be helpful to the Shaman and the members of his party, or they may be harmful to the Shaman's enemies. They last for a set period of time before disappearing, and they can also be destroyed through attacks from enemies.
Acquiring Totems
Totems are spells that are activated by having an item called a totem in the Shaman's inventory. The totems are acquired through quests that are offered to Shamans throughout the game. After the quests are completed, the Shaman receives an item labeled as a totem. The totem must be kept in the Shaman's inventory if the spell is to be used.
Types of Totems
There are four types of totems used by Shamans in "World of Warcraft." Air totems and Earth totems are used to support a group of players who are already attacking. Fire totems are used to directly attack enemies in the game, while Water totems are used to heal injuries and to restore power to the Shaman or the other members of her party.
Using Totems
Totems never do the bulk of the damage to an enemy in World of Warcraft. Instead, they are primarily used as a means to augment damage dealt by the Shaman and his group. While an enemy can destroy the totem that the Shaman creates, the spell can be cast again. Shamans may use totems to help heal their group members or they may use totems to attack their enemies.
