How Do I Set Up Attributes for a Player in a Pen & Paper RPG?

Pen and paper role-playing games are versatile forms of entertainment: They can be played in any location that has a flat surface, may include varying numbers of players and can last hours or years, depending on the length of the story and how often the game is played. They also draw on imagination and role playing to fill out the experience and require no equipment, other than pen, paper and a set of dice. When beginning a pen and paper RPG, players create characters who have a set of attributes -- basic mental and physical traits -- that are determined by rolls of dice.

Instructions

    • 1

List the attributes on your character sheet, if you are not using a prefabricated or printed character sheet. A list of character sheets available for download can be found on RPGLife.

    • 2

Roll for the first attribute. Some RPGs have different dice rolls for attributes, so follow the specifications for the RPG that you are playing. If the specifications list "3d6" for attribute rolls, you should roll the six-sided die three times to determine the initial attribute score.

    • 3

Re-roll if the initial score is unwanted and the rule set allows for attribute re-rolls.

    • 4

Record the attribute score on the character sheet. Verify the recorded score with the dungeon master or game leader.

    • 5

Repeat the steps until all attributes have been determined and recorded.
