Group Crafts
Give the children a variety of craft supplies to create dog and cat crafts. Have the children work together in a large group to create a dog or a cat. Some supplies to give the kindergartners to use include cardboard boxes, poster board, large craft pompoms, paint, craft foam, markers, construction paper, felt and googly eyes. Another idea is to divide the large group into two groups and have a contest. The groups must each create a dog and a cat using the supplies. Award prizes to the best cat and dog crafts.
Tossing Games
Divide the group into two groups and have each group stand in a circle. Give one group a cat beanbag and the other group a dog beanbag. The groups must toss the cat and dog to each other in their groups. If they drop the cat or dog, they lose the game. The team who can toss the beanbag animal around the circle the longest wins the game. For an educational version, have the children say the alphabet or call out numbers in sequential order while tossing the animal.
Circle Activities
Ask your kindergartners to stand in a circle and hand one child a dog bone. Select one player to stand in the middle and blindfold him. Have the children sing, ̶0;Doggy, doggy, where̵7;s your bone? Someone took it from your home. Guess who? Was it you?̶1; while passing the dog bone around the circle. When they finish the chant, players hide the bone behind their back; the player in the middle can take off the blindfold and try to guess who has the bone. He has three guesses to try to guess who has it. If he guesses correctly, award him with a small prize. For a cat game, the children can chant ̶0;Kitty, kitty, where̵7;s your toy? Someone took it from your home. Guess who? Was it you?̶1; while passing around a cat toy.
Sound Activities
Kindergartners can enjoy making cat and dog sounds while playing a game. Whisper the word cat or dog into the ear of each child. When you say ̶0;Go,̶1; the children must go down on all fours and make the noises of the animal they are. The children must find all the other cats or dogs and all get in one group. The first group that finds all of their animals wins the game. Another idea is to have a dog and cat contest. Give everyone time to practice and give their best cat or dog impression. Award prizes to the best, loudest, funniest and most realistic impressions.
