Minesweeper Secrets

An addictive puzzle game, "Minesweeper" comes installed on most Microsoft computers. Players attempt to navigate a grid board, flipping over squares one at a time while trying to avoid explosive land mines. Opening a safe square reveals a number indicating how many mines reside beneath the adjacent squares. Players use the numbers to deduce which squares contain mines and mark the danger with flags. Uncovering even a single mine brings the game to an abrupt end. However, "Minesweeper" contains a few secrets that can help you stay explosion-free.
  1. Reveal Mines

    • To eliminate any guesswork, you can type in a special code that reveals the location of all the board's mines. Move your cursor into the "Minesweeper" window and type "xyzzy," then press "Shift" and "Enter," then "Enter" one more time. The code will create a white dot in the upper-left corner of the "Minesweeper" screen. This dot will remain white so long as your cursor hovers over a safe square. Move your cursor over a mine, and the white dot will turn black. This trick does not work on Windows 95 or Windows NT.

    Unlimited Time

    • "Minesweeper" places a time limit on each level to increase the pressure on decisions and to prevent any extensive deliberation. However, you can gain unlimited time by pressing the left mouse button, the right mouse button and the "Escape" key or the "Ctrl" key all at once. You may also freeze the clock by starting a new game and immediately hitting the Windows and "D" keys simultaneously to minimize the "Minesweeper" window. Maximizing the window again freezes the clock in place.

    Easy Win

    • You can customize the game board to ensure an easy win. Under the game "options," click "custom" and make the board height 24, the board width 30 and the number of mines 10. The first square you click should reveal most if not all the mines, allowing you to get a one-click victory. Winning in such fashion will have the smiley face wearing sunglasses in celebration.

    Edit Best Times

    • "Minesweeper" keeps track of players' best performances and times on a leader board. If you'd like to be on top of the charts, you can always use a text editor to go in and edit the "winmine.ini" file. Find the lines of the code that include "Name1=" and "Time1=" and simply put in your name and desired time after the equal sign. Adding the line "SOUND=3" to the "winmine.ini" file will also provide the game with new sound effects.
