Basic Freeze Tag
One player is chosen to be "it." Do this by any method you choose, such as picking straws or rolling dice. Define a play area, such as a yard or open space in a park or at the beach. Have the rest of the players run around being chased by the person who is "it." If a player is tagged, he must freeze to the spot until another player unfreezes him.
Unfreezing a Player
When a player is frozen she may only be "thawed" by a teammate who has not been tagged. There are a variety of ways to do this. Decide which method to use in your game before play begins. The most basic way is for another player to simply tag the frozen player. A popular variation is for the frozen player to stand with her legs apart. A teammate must then crawl through them to unfreeze her, taking care not to get tagged herself.
Variations
Make a rule that boys can only unfreeze boys, and girls can only unfreeze girls. Alternatively, add a theme, such as Fairy Freeze Tag. Have the person who is "it" play the bad fairy. She then chases the other fairies and must touch them with her magic wand to freeze them. A free fairy must then sprinkle her with fairy dust to release her.
Ending the Game
Play until all of the players have been frozen. The last player to be frozen becomes "it" in the next round. Alternatively, have a rule that if someone is frozen three times, they automatically become the next "it."
