Apartment Cleaning Games

House keeping is one of the necessary chores in everyone's life. If you find it hard to keep up with the mess in your apartment, try turning cleaning into a game. Kids and adults alike can have more fun and get more accomplished when chores feel less like work and more like playtime.
  1. Order Up

    • Create a "menu" of all the chores that need to be done in a day. Give each chore a witty name. For example, you could call taking out the trash a "Peanut Butter and Smelly Sandwich." Divide chores into appetizers, entrees and desserts, and have each person pick out one of each course. When you divide up chores this way, everyone gets a three-course meal, and your apartment will be clean at the end.

    Color Finder

    • Split up the monotony and boredom of cleaning by tackling chores in a nontraditional way. Accomplish this by cleaning things by their colors. For example, everyone can begin by cleaning all the black items in the house: the television, dark-colored clothing and anything else that is black. Once you're done with the first color assignment, switch to a new color. By the time you clean every color of the rainbow, your apartment will be sparkling clean.

    Cleaning Races

    • Split up chores between two people and create a race. Have one person hold a stopwatch while the other person unloads the top rack of the dishwasher. When the first person is done, he can hold the stop watch and time the second person while she unloads the bottom rack. Whoever unloads their half the fastest wins. Turn other chores like cleaning baseboards into races. The competitive nature of a race helps you have fun and clean faster.

    Musical Chores

    • Liven up your cleaning sessions by playing "Musical Chores." Put on your favorite CD or make a mix CD specifically for the game. Begin cleaning, then switch to a new task at the start of each song. Incorporating music into your apartment cleaning marathons helps liven up the mood and keep your energy up. Splitting each chore into three- to five-minute sessions also helps accomplish many tasks in a small amount of time.
