Dinosaur Classroom Activities

When creating lessons for your classroom about dinosaurs, plan a variety of activities for your students. Many children find dinosaurs intriguing and enjoy learning about these prehistoric creatures. With minimal supplies and creative ideas, you can make entertaining dinosaur games, crafts and educational activities most children will find fascinating.
  1. Easy Activities

    • Print coloring pages of dinosaurs. Give one to each child and have him paint a thin layer of glue on the dinosaur shapes. Sprinkle green, gray or black glitter on top of the glue and shake off excess glitter to make a sparkly dinosaur picture. Other easy activities include dinosaur-themed word searches and puzzles.

    Dinosaur Crafts

    • Give each student a sheet of construction paper and a bowl of noodles, such as penne pasta or skinny macaroni. Have the children use the noodles to make a dinosaur skeleton on the construction paper. To get kids started, print a dinosaur skeleton picture for them to use as a guide. The students can also make dinosaur "fossils" using self-hardening clay and plastic toy dinosaurs. Have them press the dinosaurs into the clay, remove the toys and allow the clay to harden overnight.

    Educational Activities

    • Create a sensory bin by filling a large bucket with play sand and candy or plastic bones. Children can retrieve the bones with a pair of tweezers and gently dust off the bones with a toothbrush, much like an archeologist. For a variation, blindfold the children and have them stick their hands in the sand to try to find the bones. Make a memory game by printing two each of images of several types of dinosaurs. Place the pictures face down, and let the children try to remember where to find the matches. The child with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.

    Dinosaur Games

    • Have all the students sit down with a piece of paper and a pencil. When you say "Go," give the children one minute to write down as many words as they can using only the letters from the word "dinosaur." The player who comes up with the most correct words wins the game. The students can also play this game in teams. For another team game, name a dinosaur type, such as stegosaurus or triceratops, and have the teams spell the word. Award a point for each correctly spelled dinosaur name. The first team to earn five points wins the game.
