Dress Up People Games for Kids

Children love to dress up in costumes, fancy clothes and silly hats. Dressing-up can help spark imagination, fashion sense and boast self-esteem. When a child puts on a costume, he can be a fierce warrior, busy bee or inquisitive alien. Couple a child's love for dress-up with games for hours of imaginative play.
  1. Dolls

    • Use paper dolls to create a dress-up game for kids. Buy or create paper dolls and some doll clothes. Give each player a paper doll. The players take turn rolling two dice. The total of both dice must add-up to eight (or choose any number you like) in order for the player to put a piece of clothing onto her doll. The first player to have a fully dressed doll wins. For instance, if a player rolls two fours, she can select a piece of clothing. If she rolls a three and a two, she does not do anything, but passes the dice to the next player. This came can also be played with fashion dolls. The game helps children learn how to add two small numbers and provides them with fashion-themed entertainment.

    Party Games

    • Use old clothes and costumes to create a dress-up game for kids. Gather old shirts, skirts, dresses, pants and hats together. Have players divide into two teams and line up about 10 feet away from the box of old clothes. When the leader shouts "go," the first player in each team must go to the box, put on a shirt, bottom (skirt or pants) and hat. After he shows the leader he is fully dressed, he has to undress and return to the team. The next player in line has to go and do the same. The game continues until one team has had all its players dressed and undressed and has returned to formation. Another dress-up game is to put gloves and a blind fold on two players and have them race to see who can get dressed the fastest.

    Designer Contest

    • Engage children in a fashion designer game. Provide scraps of fabric, scissors and ribbon. Provide a needle and thread or hot glue for older children (with adult supervision), or masking tape for younger children. Allow the children to design an outfit for a fashion doll or baby doll. After the outfits have been made, have a fashion show and have an impartial judge declare a winner. Another way to design a garment is to give kids some newspaper, scissors and tape and ask them to create some fashion designs on each other out of the material. Have the players judge each other's work.

    Other Dress-Up Games for Kids

    • There are many options for dress-up games for kids. Children can play online dress-up games. The website Doll Dance has games that let kids dress celebrities up in various fashions (see Resources). There are other options for dress-up games, including Dress-Up Charades. Give kids a box of hats, gloves and other clothes and accessories, and let them create a costume out of the items and have other players guess what or who they are dressed up as.
