Fun Scientific Games

Science is the study of nature and people. It helps to explain phenomena through exploration and research studies. Children begin to understand how the world works through scientific study. Games and activities that stimulate interest in science are important for children's development. Scientific games explain answers children may have, and prompt them to ask new questions as they explore the world.
  1. Floating Egg

    • To play the floating egg game, provide each participant with one egg, water, salt and a tall drinking glass. Usually an egg drops to the bottom when placed in a glass of water. The challenge of the game is to see who can make the egg float in the center of the glass first with the given supplies. The answer is to put about 6 tbsp. of salt in the glass of water. Then slowly pour plain water into the glass until it is full. Be careful not to mix the salty and plain water. When the egg is gently lowered into the water, it drops into the plain water, but stops before the salted water. The salted water is denser than the tap water. Therefore, the egg floats halfway down the glass.

    Tornado in a Bottle

    • To make a tornado in a bottle collect a clear plastic bottle with a cap, glitter and dish-washing liquid. Fill the plastic bottle about three-quarters full with water. Add a few drops of dish-washing soap to the bottle. Add a few sprinkles of glitter. Place the cap on tightly so the water does not leak. Challenge participants of the game to turn the bottle upside down and spin it in a circular motion. Count how many seconds the tornado swirls in the bottle. See who can make their tornado swirl the longest to win the game.

    Move the Cups

    • Play this scientific game with two disposable cups and two 12-inch pieces of string. Use clear adhesive tape to attach the end of one string to the bottom of a cup. The other end of the string is attached to the edge of a table. Do the same with the other cup and piece of strong. The cup should hang off the table with 2 inches between them, and at the same height. Game participants are instructed to blow on the cups from the middle. They should begin to move together because of the higher pressure pushing the cups together. Challenge players to see who can make the cups move together with his breath.

    Dinosaur Bone Hunt

    • To play Dinosaur Bone Hunt, boil and clean several chicken bones. File or cut off any sharp edges on the chicken bones. Bury the bones in a sand box or on a field. A parent or teacher instructs the children to search for dinosaur bones like archeologists. The winner of the game finds the most bones. After or before this game, give a lesson on the different types of ancient dinosaurs.
