Princess Ariel Games

Walt Disney's "The Little Mermaid" drew inspiration from the like-titled Hans Christian Andersen story, though Disney gave the tale its own distinct protagonist in Princess Ariel. They also gave her a happy ending. The character inspired several spin-off products, including video games that give fans far more interaction with the red-haired heroine and her underwater world.
  1. Board Games

    • Players satisfy their interest in both Princess Ariel and classic games with USAopoly's "Little Mermaid 4-in-1 Under the Sea Games," recommended for ages 5 and up. "Little Mermaid" characters appear on the play pieces of checkers, dominoes, "Go Fish" and a tic-tac-toe game. Players race to turn Ariel into a human in Hasbro's "The Little Mermaid: Special Edition," recommended for ages 4 and up. While players move fish pawns on the board, they move the Ariel pawn one step closer to Prince Eric upon landing on an Ariel space. Landing on spaces representing the evil minions Floatsam or Jetsam temporarily traps a player's pawn on the space. The player moving the Ariel mermaid pawn to the top step replaces the mermaid pawn with the human pawn and wins the game.

    Card Games

    • Three classic card games receive Princess Ariel treatment in USAopoly's "Little Mermaid 3 in 1 Card Game Set," recommended for ages 5 and up. Crazy 8's, Go Fish and Old Maid comprise the set of games. Ariel, Prince Eric, King Triton and Ursula appear on the cards. Other "Little Mermaid" card games include Briarpatch's "Treasure Trove Card Game" and "Under the Sea Card Game." In the Go-Fish-like "Treasure Trove," players try to collect the most sets of treasure cards and avoid the sea witch Ursula, who threatens to take their voice away. In "Under the Sea," players practice colors, patterns and shapes recognition as they help Ariel bring her sea friends together.

    Computer/Video Games

    • Ariel and her daughter Melody participate in underwater Atlantica adventures in Disney Interactive's "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" for Windows and Mac systems. Players can record their singing voice in a karaoke-style sing-a-long, and tackle arcade-style mazes. Ariel and company sing to unlock clues and discover buried treasure in the Nintendo DS game "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure." Throughout the game, players tackle musical mini-games and jam with the Barnacle Band. Other Ariel-themed video games include Nintendo's "The Little Mermaid II: Pinball Frenzy," Buena Vista Games' "The Little Mermaid: Magic in Two Kingdoms" and THQ's "The Little Mermaid II."

    Online Games

    • Players choose dance moves for Ariel in "Ariel Water Ballet" found at Y8 and other sites. Also at Y8, players assume the role of Ariel or her sea-king father King Triton and use the arrow keys to battle foes in "King Triton's Tournament." Ariel's special attack is her voice. A press of the "Enter" button makes Ariel sing and that will freeze all of her enemies. Players help Ariel keep her human items away from Ursula in "Secret Sea Collection," also found at Y8. Players must make her swim to the top of the water to give items to Scuttle, the seagull.
