Online Adventures for Kids

Online adventures for children can be both exciting and educational. The federal government has a variety of websites designed to help children learn about topics like space exploration, the environment, art, and the challenges that other countries face with water pollution, housing, etc. These games help children to learn about the world around them.

Waterlife
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration has a game called "Waterlife." It teaches children about estuaries, the point where the river water meets sea water. It also teaches children about ecosystems, the negative effects of pollution and why the ecosystem is important for ocean-based life and humans. In the game, kids have to clean up waste including aluminum cans, bottles, paper and other trash. Kids also restore the ecosystem by planting seeds and watching the seeds grow into plants. The purpose the game is to teach science-based concepts and enhance a child's interest in the environment.
NASA Kids Club
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) hosts a website for kids called the NASA Kids' Club. On the site, children can explore outer space, play games, and learn about astronauts who are currently in space. Kids explore outer space on the site by viewing pictures of outer space and pictures of Orion and Altair. Orion is the new spacecraft that NASA plans to use to send astronauts back to the moon. Altair is a new moon lander. With air and stoarge for sufficient supplies, Altair can sustain astronauts for a week as they explore the moon.
Peace Corps Challenge
- The Peace Corps website has a game called Peace Corps Challenge. The child playing the game is a Peace Corps volunteer assigned to the fictional village of Wanzuzu. While in the village, each player learns about the challenges that the villagers face like microfinance, water sanitation, farming, and education. For instance, the water is contaminated, so villagers must boil the water before they drink it. The players must choose which are the best options to help the villagers overcome the various challenges.
Portrait for Kids
- The National Gallery of Art has an online game called Portrait for Kids. In the game, the curator has an unfinished portrait of George Washington. The players must follow the clues to find the missing pieces of the portrait and solve the mystery. Each clue that the player uncovers teaches him about George Washington and the painting.
