Fun Games for February

Dreary February, with its cold temperatures, long nights and forced seclusion, can seem like "the month of no fun." However, by incorporating a few playful games at home or at school, you can turn February into one of the most exciting months of the year. All you need is a little creativity, and you can get through the shortest month in no time.
  1. Valentine Story Maker

    • For large classrooms or slumber parties, the Celebrations website suggests playing a creative story-making game for the Valentine's Day holiday. Start the game by giving each person a pencil. Take out a blank sheet of paper and fold it into accordion sections -- one section for each of the participants. The first player writes the first sentence of a love story on the paper. After she writes the sentence, pass the paper to the next player, who writes a sentence in the next section. Each player is only allowed to look at the sentence before hers. At the end, read the (often kooky) story aloud.

    Sexy Scrabble

    • Some games are meant to keep you and your lover busy during periods of cold isolation. For an adult game for the winter months, play "Sexy Scrabble," where you can only play words with romantic meanings. Use words that express how you feel about each other, such as: love, best, wife or husband. Because fewer words are available to you, give each player nine or 10 tiles, instead of the usual seven.

If you want to turn this into a family-friendly game, play words that have February meanings, such as: month, cold, winter, second or groundhog.

    Mini-Olympics

    • Some people think that the winter Olympics, at every four years, don't come often enough. If you're one of these people, create your own February mini-Olympics (2010's Winter Olympics kicked off Feb. 12). If you have outside access on a snowy day, contestants compete in timed snowman building or snowball distance throwing. If you must stay inside, perform sock "ice" skating, mock gymnastics (where the only important aspects are the landings) and "ski" jumping competition (see who can do the coolest trick while jumping).

    Groundhog Hiding

    • The groundhog isn't the only one having fun on Feb. 2. Turn the day into a day of groundhog-style hide-and-go-seek, with educational lessons. Although similar to traditional hide-and-go-seek, on Groundhog Day, tape facts about groundhogs, the holiday and the month of February around your space. While you count to 100, the players compete to see who can read and learn the most facts. For an easier game, add more time. If in a school setting, offer extra credit to the student who remembers the most facts.
