Scavenger Hunt Games

Scavenger hunts can be organized based on different age groups and at different locations. A successful scavenger hunt includes a list of items that are possible to find without extreme difficulty. When kids are bored and you're out of ideas to keep them busy, throw together a quick scavenger hunt list and send them on their way.
  1. Online

    • Introduce children to online scavenger hunt games they can play. Clifford the Big Red Dog's Scavenger hunt allows children to play along with Clifford and his friends while searching for select items. Each animal is searching for one particular item and children must select a location to look for the item based on where they think it might be located. Another way to use the Internet for a scavenger hunt is to distribute lists of items to find information on using various websites. Students must write down the websites they used and the answer the questions.

    Home

    • Organize a scavenger hunt at your home for your children and friends. Create a simple list of items that can be found throughout your home, and make copies of the list. Split the group into pairs and give each pair a copy of the list and a bag to collect the items in. The first pair to gather all the items will win a small prize such as a candy bar or ice cream of their choice.

    Photo Scavenger Hunt

    • Organize a scavenger hunt that includes photos of each item on the list which can include landmarks, people or places. This type of scavenger hunt is appropriate for older children or teenagers who can drive. Make a list of various items, places, landmarks or people that you need to find and take a picture of. Distribute inexpensive digital cameras or disposable cameras to each group along with the list. At the end of the hunt, meet up with the groups at a photography store and print out the photos to see who completed the entire list first.

    On Location

    • Take your group to a local area such as the mall, park or beach and give them a list of items they must find and collect. Provide a box for each group or pair and send them off to find the items on the list. Include items that can be taken without requiring a purchase, such as napkins from various food vendors, seashells of a particular color or leaves from a particular tree. Arrange a meeting place at the end of the hunt and go over each list with the group to see who gathered the items the fastest.
