Homemade Games with Marbles

Marbles are hard, small balls made from glass, steel, clay, stone or wood. Many children and people use marbles to play a variety of games. If you have a bag of marbles at home, use your creativity to make homemade games everyone can enjoy. From games of marble toss to marble slots, a few inexpensive supplies and marbles are all you need to get started.
  1. Marble Toss

    • Take paper or plastic cups and scatter them on the floor. Mark a standing line on the floor using tape about 10 feet from the cups. Use a black marker to write point values on the cups (higher points for cups farther away from the standing line and lower points for closers cups). Give each player 10 marbles to try to toss into the cups. Add up each player's points and the player with the most points wins the game. Play this game outside in case of errant throws; you do not want to break anything. Do not play this game with small children, as marbles are a choking hazard.

    Foot Marbles

    • For another outdoor game, try a game of foot marbles. Fill a small plastic swimming pool with water and a bag of marbles. Have two players sit on opposite sides of the pool (on their bottoms). Tell them to take their shoes and socks off both feet. Players can wear their bathing suits if they prefer, because there is a chance of getting wet. When you say, "Go," the players must use their feet and toes to remove as many marbles from the pool as they can. They must use only their feet and lay each marble on the ground beside the pool as they find it. The player who collects the most marbles wins the game. You can set a time limit or let the players find marbles until they are all gone.

    Rolling Marbles

    • Paint one marble with a fluorescent paint, such as lime green or neon pink, and make sure no other marbles are that color. Place the fluorescent marble in the middle of a play area, such as the living area floor. Each player must select a marble to use during the game. Mark a line about 15 feet from the marble on the floor. Each player must stand behind the line and roll their marble toward the fluorescent marble. The player who rolls his marble closest to the fluorescent marble wins the game. Players can knock each other's marbles out of the way to get closer to the fluorescent marble.

    Marble Slots

    • Take an empty shoebox or small cardboard box (facing open side up) and cut three triangle slots down one of the sides. Each triangle should be a different size, but each one must be large enough to roll a marble through it. Place the open slots face down on a floor or hard table. Write a point value above each slot, such as 10 for the largest slot and 30 for the biggest slot. Give each player five marbles to try to roll through the slots in the box. Have each player roll the marbles from a line that is about 3 feet from the box. Keep a record of each player's scores, and the player with the highest score wins the game.
