What Are Different Games for Kids?

Many different kinds of games can be played by kids of almost any age. Depending on your child's interests, he or she may want to play multiple kinds of games throughout the day, and having a wide variety on hand is the best way to keep their minds and bodies occupied during playtime. Have kids participate in some of these different kinds of games to help them pass the time away from the TV.
  1. Card Games

    • Card games are a favorite among children and parents alike, as decks of cards are easy to store, clean up and deal out on short notice. With a set of traditional suited playing cards, kids can entertain themselves for hours with games like War, Go Fish and Slap Jack. There are also specially-made card decks of games children can play such as Crazy 8's, UNO and Old Maid.

    Board Games

    • Board games are a great way for a group of kids to pass the time and stay out of trouble. Classic board games such as Candy Land, Chutes &Ladders and Monopoly can be set up for children to play inside or out on the lawn. Many modern board games like Scene It?, Balderdash and Pictionary have interactive features like DVD play mode and other non-traditional board game challenges like charades or drawing out clues.

    Video Games

    • According to the National Institute on Media and the Family (NIMF), 92 percent of children age 2-17 play video games anywhere from 22 to 33 minutes each day. Video games came on the scene in 1972 with the introduction of the Magnavox Odyssey gaming console, and today they have evolved to suit the tastes and interests of today's young gamers. There are many different kinds of video games for kids to choose from, including classic gaming systems like Atari, Telstar and Channel F, more modern gaming consoles such as the Wii, Xbox and PlayStation systems, computer video games and even hand-held systems.

    Action Games

    • Some of the simplest children's games are those that only need a few young, able bodies willing to participate, such as Tag, Hide-and-Seek and Charades. Action games like Red Rover, Blind Man's Bluff and Red Light Green Light have been keeping kids on the playground occupied for years, and with the right ball children can be playing dodge ball, HORSE, kickball or Four Square in no time flat. Hopscotch, Capture the Flag and Jump Rope are other action games that will keep kids playing for hours on end.
