How to Make a Bobby Pin Snapper

Bobby pin snappers, which are also referred to as poppers, are a small toy children can make out of a standard metal bobby pin. When bent and manipulated correctly, the bobby pin makes a loud snapping sound when deployed. You can also drop a bobby pin snapper onto a hard surface and watch it pop back up into the air, if it hits the surface correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal bobby pin (bobby pin snappers are painful if discharged anywhere on your body or if it pops back on you when dropped)

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the bobby pin vertically, so the open portion of the bobby pin is facing the ceiling.

    • 2

Place your thumb on the straight prong of the bobby pin, approximately one-quarter of the length of the prong above the bottom of the pin.

    • 3

Grip the top of the straight prong and bend it down over your thumb, so that the prong is at a 90 degree angle. Remove your thumb once the bobby pin is bent.

    • 4

Bend the bent prong down and then back up the other side. The prong is again at a 90 degree angle, only facing the opposite direction. A loop is formed when the bobby pin is bent in this manner.

    • 5

Pull up on the bent prong and rest the head of the prong on the ridged prong. The bobby pin is now ready to snap.

    • 6

Hold the bobby pin by the head of the ridged prong with the loop facing down.

    • 7

Tap the loop on a table to release the bent pin and make a loud snapping noise. You can also drop the bobby pin so that the loop touches a hard surface and pops into the air.
