How to Design a Playground Game

Designing a game for children to play in a playground is a simple activity. Kids don't need complicated equipment to play a game. The size of a child's imagination is such that with a little guidance they can play any game almost indefinitely. However, by designing a game you can help children learn and keep them occupied to prevent them from fighting. With a little thought, a playground game can be a fun activity for all concerned.

Give a new twist to an existing game. For example, Red Light/Green Light is the game where one child looks away and shouts "Green light." The other children advance on her until she shouts "Red light" and turns around. Anyone she sees moving has to go back to the start point. Place a twist on this game by having the children advance by pretending they are swimming, rowing a boat or any other variation you decide. Changing the variation will keep the children amused and make the game last longer.

Design a game that will teach children. For example, to explain how atoms and molecules work in a solid, liquid and gas take all the children into a large, open area. Tell them to close their eyes and walk around. Tell them to put their hand up every time they walk into someone. Count the number of collisions. This represents molecules in a gas. Now have them walk around in an area half the size and put their hands up when they bump into someone. This represents a liquid. Now have them all stand in a very small area and repeat the exercise. This will help them to understand the properties of various different states of matter whilst playing a fun game.

Teach children about disabilities with playground games. Place blindfolds on children and have them walk around in the playground. Supervise them so that they don't hurt themselves. Place noise-canceling earphones on children and have them see what it is like to be deaf.

Design a fun playground game for a child's party. This will be based on the costume theme of the party. If you are hosting a pirate party, hide some candy somewhere in the playground. Tell them it is buried treasure. Have them walk around looking for it, whilst you call out "Hot" or "Cold" depending on their location.
