How to Create Your Own Calculator Game

Calculators are typically introduced to students in the later years of grammar school when math equations become more complex -- such as with division and multiplication tables, as well as with basic algebra. Calculator operations then increase in their complexity as students progress to middle and high school, where they calculate square roots, geometry angles and first encounter calculus operations. Incorporating a game to teach students the proper ways to use a calculator, as well as to familiarize them with the calculator buttons, can help engage their interest and help them to retain the information.

  Split the group into pairs and provide each pair with one calculator.

  Instruct the person with the calculator to ask their partner the number of the month of their birth. For example, for July, the month is seven.

  Multiply the birthday month by the number seven on the calculator.

  Subtract the number one from that number and then multiply the number calculated by 13.

  Ask the partner the date he was born and add that number to the total. Add three to that number then multiply it by 11.

  Subtract the birthday month and then the birthday date from the number.

  Divide the number by 10, then add 11 to the number and then divide it by 100. The number on the screen should show the partners birthday.
- 8
  Redo the game with the opposite partner doing the calculations.
