How to Make and Polish a Horse Shoe Set

The game of horse shoes has entertained generations of Americans. Whether a simple game in the backyard or a World Championship Horse Shoe competition, it still requires 4 horse shoes and two stakes. If you are going to own a set of horse shoes, you might like it to be an authentic one. A little scavenging from your local farriers and some wire brush polishing will make a special horse shoe set for your next home tournament,

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a local stable or farrier (one who shoes horses) and ask about how to get used horse shoes. Obtain four shoes.

    • 2

Obtain 2 railroad spikes. These can be found along abandoned railroad tracks, at flea markets and at auctions.

    • 3

Attach a steel brush attachment to a drill or grinder. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the wire brush attachment.

    • 4

Polish horse shoes and spikes with the wire-brush attachment. Wear protective eye gear, a dust mask and a pair of heavy-duty gloves to protect against injuries from metal shavings.

    • 5

Place the horse shoe or railroad spike in a vice or clamp to hold it secure when using a drill or grinder with a wire-brush attachment.

    • 6

Move the brush against the item. Work on small surface areas and start at a slow speed. Increase the speed of the wire brush rotation gradually as brushing works more effectively at a higher speed of rotation.

    • 7

Brush the metal shavings and any debris from the polished horse shoes and railroad spikes with a wisk broom. Do not use bare hands as the metal shavings are sharp.

    • 8

Polish horse shoes and railroad spikes with a soft cotton cloth.

    • 9

Store horse shoes and railroad ties in a dry place to avoid rust.
